Alexei Popov

Alexei Popov finished his education at the Rimsky-Korsakov Specialized Music College in the class of G.M. Hoserova before studying at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in the classes of Professors Kramarov and Stopichev. He studied quartet performance with Professor Ovcharek, and chamber music with Professor Fidler.

At his last year at the Conservatory, in 1985 А. Popov was invited to play at the Rimsky Korsakov quartet where he is playing at present. The audience and the press used to note the soft and expressive tone of his viola "Alexei Popov playing is full with spirituous feelings, as if flying over the world" – wrote "Der Tagesspiegel", May 11, 1995 after the quartet performance in Berlin Philharmonic Hall. The musician does not limit himself to quartet performance, he is often playing chamber music in other ensembles. The repertoire of the viola player comprises works by J.S. Bach, F. Schubert, M. Glinka, J.Brahms; trio by Haydn, works by Mozart, Schumann, works by the composers of the XX c. For several years А.Popov was teaching a class of quartet performance at the Saint-Petersburg State Conservatory, however during the last years he fully returned to the concert activity.
